Rickey Smiley and Pastor John P. Kee Stands On “Nothing Can Stop Us” At 22nd Annual Super Bowl Gospel Celebration

Fans are gear up for Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Florida, and The Weeknd will grace the halftime time on Sunday night ( February 7) at Raymond James Stadium.

The 22nd Annual Super Bowl Gospel Celebration will occur on Saturday (February 6), hosted by national radio and TV personality Rickey Smiley. This year’s theme, “Nothing Can Stop Us,” is the inspirational message for this highly anticipated night of praise and worship during Super Bowl LV.

Pastor Mike Todd will give the special opening prayer. The broadcast will honor Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson with this year’s “Faith In Action Award,” presented by celebrated NFL Legend Warrick Dunn (Tampa Bay Buccaneers & Atlanta Falcons). The son of a courageous cancer survivor, Watson is one of the NFL’s youngest philanthropists and is committed to causes that support families and youth in underserved communities.

In collaboration with the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration, the American Cancer Society will highlight the need to eliminate barriers to prevention and treatment in the black community during the broadcast.

On Thursday (February 4), I spoke with Rickey Smiley and John P. Kee via zoom about what the theme of this year meant to them.

“I not only love the saying it had to be oiled,” said Kee, who will be performing at the Gospel celebration. “Because in my performance I had a breakdown and my breakdown in the song we sing ‘Nothing can stop us, we made it out alright’ so I just think that it worked really good.”

Pastor Kee continued to share his testimony of contracting COVID-19 last year, while Smiley chimed in on the conversation. “Black folks we just always resilient we’re going through a pandemic and a pandemic in the last strand of the administration in the White House,” said the returning host of this years event. “I went through coronavirus as well, but the fact that I was taking those vitamins I was asymptomatic the whole time.”

Eventually, the conversation ended in laugher when Smiley suggesting they put the vaccines in Chick-fil-a it would be over by now.

The celebration will feature performances by The NFL Players Choir, John P. Kee, & Kierra Sheard. Pharrell Williams, Erica Campbell, PJ Morton, Koryn Hawthorne & Zacardi Cortez will present Voices of Fire.

There will be special appearances by NFL Players Dak Prescott, Teddy Bridgewater, Jacoby, Brissett, Desean Jackson, Lamar Jackson, Cris Carter & More
