URBAN ONE HONORS heralds the exemplary accomplishments of African American women in this year’s tribute show premiering on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/8.
Honorees included Stacey Abrams, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Dr. Ala Stanford, Rosalind Brewer and Robin Rue Simmons. A special homage was also made to the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, one of the most celebrated female jazz bands of all time.
This year’s theme is ‘Women Leading the Change’ and will highlight the extraordinary contributions of women in business, media, health, politics, leading to impactful change within the Black community. Now in its third year, URBAN ONE HONORS was created to acknowledge and pay homage to individuals and organizations whose work significantly impacts society and culture.
Before the show, I spoke with Grammy-Award-winning gospel artist, author, and syndicated radio personality Erica Campbell about the evolution of women taking over this male dominated field.
The ceremony was packed with equally talented, contemporary, female performers including Jazmine Sullivan, Da Brat, Avery Sunshine, and Le’Andria Johnson, and the all-female house band Kim Burse and the KB Players. A special homage was made to the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, with five musical performances celebrating the jazz ensemble throughout the ceremony.
